The Writing on the Wall

Cactus Trouble

Don’t they normally grow the other way round? For all you google map fans were here at the moment.

Preserves

There seems to be some strange shift in the colour palette of the jam/marmalade here. It’s a bit like them changing the colour of salt & vinegar and cheese & onion crisps. What was that all about? Answers on a comments page please… The above jam is yellow… so it tastes of… lemon? Lime? Some other yellow thing I can’t remember the name of? No, it tastes of strawberries obviously. Yesterday’s red jam tasted of pineapple. The green jam tastes […]

Tea for Two

Ah, tea on the veranda, how civilised. There’s a lot of tea drinking in India. I know this probably comes as no great surprise. The tea of the masses is of course “Chai” usually served in some sort of disposable earthenware cup that imparts a slightly strange taste to the drink and draws all the moisture out of your lips. Being unglazed your lips also tend to stick to it. Nice. Splashing out on a pot for maybe 60 rupees […]

Desparate attempts at calming sunburn down

I can recommend this technique for a scorched face. The side effects are a rather strange however.. Add cold water to travel towel and wrap around head. Wait. Some time later you wake up looking like Christopher Walken in “The Deerhunter.”

Varkala Clifftops

I’m warming to it here – no doubt due to sunburn incurred whilst sat under an umbrella whilst having breakfast. Factor 20 or not I’ve still ended up looking like a beetroot. Never mind, I’m sure it’ll fade to a golden tan by morning.. or something. Above is a picture of the clifftops. Pretty isn’t it? The slightly un-nerving thing is the fact that the cliffs are in a process of constant erosion and the path is perilously close to […]

Quest for the Club Sandwich

There’s a standing joke about the quest for the perfect club sandwich. It’s the holy grail of travelling if you will. Why? I’ve no idea. Perhaps it’s because it seems to be difficult to get “just right” – especially in a foreign country. We spent an inordinately large amount of time and effort on this whilst in Thailand. This usually involved Pat trying to explain that he wanted the “bacon crispy.” The net result was usually a rather nasty sandwich. […]
